Air Ducts: one of the catch-alls in a home–literally. What could be lingering in the darkness of your home’s air ducts?

It is surprising what is found in air ducts, what people will put in air ducts, and what you might wish you never knew was found in air ducts. Let’s have some fun! Fair warning, some of these are cringy and gross, but all are true and have been found in air ducts around the country.

It is surprising what is found in air ducts, what people will put in air ducts, and what you might wish you never knew was found in air ducts. Let’s have some fun! Fair warning, some of these are cringy and gross, but all are true and have been found in air ducts around the country and in Wichita, Kansas.

THE GOOD

I’ll preface this with, of course, that air ducts should be clear and clean so that there is no obstruction of air flow and ventilation. But for the purposes of this blog we will label the things found as good because they weren’t necessarily gross or bad in and of themselves.

  • Books
  • Love letters
  • Cash box
  • Jewelry
  • Pencils
  • Coins
  • Children’s toys

THE BAD

Going into this bad section, you’ll notice these are things that we start to associate with smells and odors that will linger and travel with the air flow, cause allergies to act up for people, or just in general lead to bad air quality in the home.

  • Food wrappers
  • Dishes (with or without food on them–yeah, gross)
  • Hair – not always the current owner’s hair, either
  • Lots of dust…LOTS of dust
  • If there were pets, lots of pet hair and dander
  • Empty soda and beer cans/bottles
  • Live animals have been found – kittens and birds

THE UGLY

Here we are going to step into the dark zone because as we like to say, “I’m not afraid of the dark, I’m afraid of what’s in the dark.”

  • Dead animals – snakes, squirrels, rodents, birds
  • Bugs and spiders – dead or alive – preferably dead
  • Moldy food and opened (but not empty) beer/soda cans
  • Vents not connected properly and pulling air from the crawl space under the house
  • Urine and feces

Maybe we will stop there with The Ugly, I feel like that’s enough. Right? Yeah, that’s enough.

These finds that have been made are extraordinary, but sometimes not as extraordinary as one might think. That being said, there are far more common things that are found in air ducts that can cause severe issues within the home and for those living there. Mold, mildew, excessive dust, pollen, and pet dander are common in Wichita, Kansas.

If you have noticed a lingering and smelly odor, have vents that don’t put out air as they should, or are experiencing allergies and asthma – give us a call at FreshCo Cleaning and Restoration. We can clean and clear any obstructions that may be present in the air ducts, bringing good air quality back to your home for the health of you, your family, and your home.

And if you aren’t sure? Just read those lists again…and remember, a call is just a click away!
